Welcome to Biola, FirstGen students! A first-generation college student is in the first generation of their family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in the United States. FirstGen students come in many variations. Perhaps one or both of your parents attended college but haven’t graduated with their bachelor’s degree. Maybe your parents graduated from college in another country, or you weren’t raised by your biological parents who attended college. Maybe your parents are going to college at the same time as you. Whatever your story is, we are glad you are at Biola!

Mission
The purpose of SGA is to serve the student body, promote their interests and welfare, ensure understanding throughout the Biola community and foster a Christ-centered community.

How to Get Involved
Even if you are not interested in joining SGA, we would love to have you involved in our work:

1) Attend a senate meeting. We meet in the SGA Conference Room (Upper SUB) on Thursdays from 4:30–7:30 p.m. Please email our Senior VP at sga.senior.vp@biola.edu so we can make room for you to watch.

2) Follow us on Instagram @sga_biola. Our social media is your go-to for all updates, information on upcoming votes and fun opportunities to engage with the SGA team.

3) Create a proposal: Check out the proposals page on our website for more information.

4) Meet your senator. Your senator (who you can find at https://www.biola.edu/sga/meet-us) would always love to keep you informed over email or in-person at an SGA Hour. SGA Hour is Sunday nights at 9 p.m. in the dorms, and in the SGA office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12–1 p.m. for the commuter senators.

Mission
The Student Missionary Union (SMU) is the largest student-led missions organization in the United States. We currently maintain a staff of 24 students as well as hundreds of student volunteers. Since 1923, SMU has grown from a small group of students passionate about missions to an organization that aims to be a resource for Biola undergraduate students to participate in the Great Commission.

Our ministry focuses in three primary areas: Biola, our City, and the Nations. Students from every background and skillset can live out the Great Commission in their lives through local ministry opportunities, Missions Conference, global short-term trips, and discipleship groups.

SMU exists to motivate and mobilize students to align their lives towards the completion of the Great Commission. Our desire is to consistently raise up generations of student leaders who passionately and obediently serve Jesus throughout their lives. God alone deserves the worship of all nations and all peoples and it is to that end that we labor.
